What is Cherry Oil aka refined Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)?
Cherry Oil is a type of solvent-based hash oil, also known as BHO (butane hash oil). Learn more about this wonderful product in our blog. Find our product guide here.
Similar to other cannabis concentrates, Cherry Oil is produced by extracting the active compounds found in the marijuana plant. It is in the dried and cured cannabis flowers (aka buds) where the active compounds are found in their highest concentration. For extraction purposes, Butane also plays a key role. It is a powerful solvent that pulls out all the precious terpenes and cannabinoids. Hence, these active compounds become extremely concentrated.
Thus, the effects experienced upon consuming Cherry Oil are much more potent as compared to smoking a traditional joint. Also, none of the residual plant material is left in the final product and because of this, the flavor is distinctly delicious. Note that both terpenes and cannabinoids are in charge of the unique effects of the green medication.
Terpenes are tiny molecules that make up for the one-of-a-kind aroma and taste profile of each strain. Cannabinoids and terpenes work in synergy. This way, users can rejoice at a multi-layered high. Nonetheless, terpenes can further increase or inhibit particular benefits associated with the different cannabinoids. For example, studies confirm that Linalool terpene can promote good sleep and relaxation and cannabis varieties high in Linalool will provide extended benefits to those trying to combat insomnia.
Picture terpenes as an army of soldiers who help the generals (THC and CBD, among other cannabinoids), to stimulate the endocannabinoid system in different ways.
Cherry Oil vs. Honey Oil vs. RSO. What’s it all about?
RSO is full spectrum cannabis oil. Basically soaked in ethanol to remove miscible product. The ethanol is then removed and you have RSO aka phenix tears. Honey oil and cherry oil is taken one step further. It’s winterized to remove fats and wax’s. The difference between honey and cherry is more chlorophyll is removed from in honey oil. RSO is know to have more medical benefits, but for smoking cherry oil is best. We’ve put together a great guide on everything you need to know about Cherry Oil.
Cherry oil is a cannabis extract that contains very high concentrations of THC.
Sometimes confused with honey oil whose THC range is 75-80%, cherry oil has a lower THC concentration ranging from 65-70%. Both have been popular for decades. The concentrated THC creates a distinct high that feels far more psychedelic and intense than edibles or pure cannabis. For this reason, cherry oil and concentrates like it should only be consumed by experienced users.
For the production of Honey Oil, experts apply the same methods as with Cherry Oil. In fact, the term honey oil is often used as a synonym to hash oil and indeed, the vivid color highly resembles sweet organic honey.
Ultimately, what cannabis gurus call “hash oil”, and “honey oil,” as in the case with both Cherry Oil and Honey Oil, is a type of butane hash oil. This kind of butane hash oil has the loosest consistency of all other cannabis concentrates.
The consistency of cannabis oils is only slightly thicker than liquid. Also, these oils are quite sticky. Therefore, you will find them available in convenient-to-use packages, such as syringes like ours. Using a syringe to consume Butane Hash Oil is one of the best ways to go.
By doing so, you can fully enjoy the full range of properties in your cannabis intake.
What is RSO?
In 2003, Rick Simpson created a cannabis oil after three suspicious bumps on his arm turned out to be basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer. Simpson had used cannabis to treat medical issues in the past, so he made a cannabis oil to treat his skin cancer topically, applying it to a bandage and covering the cancerous spots.
RSO is an oil made by washing cannabis buds with a solvent, such as pure light naphtha, and then boiling off the solvent leaving behind the oil. RSO is not a branded product. That means there’s no one “Rick Simpson Oil” for sale. On his website, Simpson explains how to make his namesake oil. But he does not sell a version of the oil for profit.
Because RSO contains high levels of THC, it’s illegal to buy in many places. But in states that have legalized marijuana — either for personal use or for medical use — you can find RSO at cannabis dispensaries.
Why Buy Elevated Cherry Oil in bulk?
The main claim surrounding RSO is that it treats cancer. After Simpson was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2003, he began applying RSO to the cancerous spots on his face and neck. According to Simpson, the spots healed within a few days.
According to Rick Simpson’s website, RSO is made from a particular type of cannabis called Cannabis indica, which produces a sedative effect that helps the body heal.
In addition to cancer, RSO is said to also treat:
- multiple sclerosis
- arthritis
- asthma
- infections
- inflammation
- high blood pressure
- depression
- insomnia
There remains a need for more research to support the purported effectiveness of RSO and other cannabinoid-based concoctions. But there are already indicators that cannabis could be a powerful tool in combating cancer and the detrimental side effects of its treatment. The antitumor properties of cannabinoids in cell lines and in animal models induced with cancer have been well-documented in peer-reviewed research over the years, but more research is needed to prove the efficacy and safety for clinical trials involving human patients.
How do I use Cherry Oil?
For medical patients, it is always recommended to consult your physician before starting any new treatment regimen. However, some physicians may be averse to cannabis as a course of treatment. If you decide to use RSO, proceed with caution and at your own discretion.
When looking for symptom relief for a condition or for medical benefits, for one patient, the goal is to gradually consume 60 grams of Rick Simpson Oil over the course of a 90-day period.
Dosages vary from person to person depending on many factors, including the potency of the RSO, which Simpson claims is 80% to 90% THC.
As Cherry Oil is further purified (in comparison to RSO), it is considered safe to smoke. Other methods of use include:
- As a topical rubbed onto the surface of the skin
- As a sublingual (under the tongue) for the fastest absorption rate
- As a capsule taken orally for slowest-acting effects that last longer
You can cook with RSO/Cherry Oil as well, just as you can with cannabutter or cannabis cooking oil. Consider the dish you’ll be making and keep in mind the texture and stickiness of RSO. As far as baking, it will be easier to mix it in with something that has more liquid ingredients, like a cake or brownies, as opposed to cookies. RSO is great for drizzling over any type of food, but the taste can be a little off-putting for some. You may want to mix it with a sauce or something else to mask the flavor.
Final Thoughts on Cherry Oil
If you’re looking for an alternative to Distillate based edibles, then RSO is your new best friend. The addition of fats & lipids is known to have medicinal benefits and provide therapeutic relief far outweighing the majority of edibles you find on the market. While the claims of helping with cancer are not yet proven, the number of patients turning to RSO as an additional supplement in their day to day regiment is growing.
To put it simply, Phoenix Tears are a strong, concentrated form of cannabis extract. They are also known under such names as RSO (Rick Simpson Oil), F.E.C.O. (Fully Extracted Cannabis Oil), hashish oil – or just “cannabis extract”. No matter what the name is, it is a highly potent extract which is said to treat a wide range of serious ailments and diseases. Each syringe contains approximately 60% THC and 6% CBD. Comes as individual 1g syringes. Some uses include treating chronic pain, sleep ailments, arthritis, and anxiety.
Product Use: RSO is meant to be a sticky and viscous rather than a thin liquid. To use this product effectively, we recommend heating it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds (with the bottom cap removed) and then pushing the syringe gently. The syringes can also be placed in lukewarm water for 10-15 minutes before usage

First batch ordered this oil tastes GREEEEEAT! the high is decent and very thick, syringe is possible but you must warm with boiling water. And stir i enjoy this very much. I need to try RSO aswell
One of the better batches I’ve had this time.
Tightly sealed. No leaks. Great oil !!! 5/5 !!!
August 2024 – This 14g jar is now a staple go to of mine. I vape it, wrap it round a cigarette, in joints, blended with other resins and as an ingredient in homemade hashish. I also use it in hot chocolate with CBD distillate and shrooms.
I love the flavour, the consistency of the high and the malleability of the resin at different temperatures. In a bundle during a sale the jar becomes crazily affordable, and is preferable for my clumsy fingers than the small ampoules. So this is a must have for me, especially with that high CBD count already. Smells divine. Tastes great too. An excellent product!
Not bad
Best yet!
Unfortunately I don’t find this stuff worth the money. I get the same buzz from molasses. I would definitely not recommend this at all from my perspective.
The cherry oil is very good
Meh
Tastes terrible and smells like a used BT bottle lol hard to work with for smoking but will see how the edibles work!
Just what the doctor ordered…
